Understanding your EIN letter and SS4 form - FAQs

Starting a company in the United States involves receiving important documents from the IRS, such as the EIN letter and the SS4 form. These documents often raise common questions. Below you’ll find clear explanations to help you understand them and proceed confidently with your business operations.

EIN Letter

Why is my name not complete in the EIN letter?

Do not worry! This is a very common situation. The IRS often abbreviates names when they are longer than the character limit they accept.

  • This abbreviation does not affect the validity of your EIN or your ability to operate.

  • Entities and institutions are familiar with this practice, so you can continue your operations without concern.

SS4 Form

Why is only one member listed on the SS4 form?

The SS4 form is used to apply for the EIN (Employer Identification Number), which serves as the company’s tax identification number in the United States — similar to the CNPJ in Brazil.

  • The IRS requires that only one person be listed as the Responsible Party.

  • This individual is legally responsible for the company before the IRS and is the one who signs official documents.

  • If you prefer someone else to be designated, it is possible to update the Responsible Party with the IRS.

  • Other member names will appear in the State Documents (depending on the state) and in the Operating Agreement, not in the SS4 form.

✅ With this information, you can feel confident that both the EIN letter and SS4 form are correct and aligned with IRS requirements.
